ECDIS related accidents can happen due to many factors. Wrong settings, no updated charts or user error could be the reason for such accident. The use of safety contour should be something which is kept under close control by the nagivators, and especially the Master. For the most of us it is natural to have a safety contour set on a value corresponding to the ship’s draft, UKC policies and some extra meters.

However, in the MARS report you can reas about an accident where the safety contour actually was on more shallow depth than the ship’s draft. I really hope the navigators on that bridge have been home doing their homework.

Read about this and much more in MARS report 241.
