They are still around! The mooring accidents! Last month Marqua forwarded an accident report regarding a fatal accident on board a cargo ship during a routine mooring operation. In this month’s MARS you can read about an AB getting injured after departure.

Mooring related injuries has been focused on for years, and OCIMF has published a small but helpful publication which will help you to avoid the dangerous bight or snap!

Furhermore, in the foreword to MARS the knowledge of COLREG’s around the world is questioned. The regulations came into force 1972 but still some officer’s using the VHF for navigation. Training institutions have state of the art simulators, but maybe more effort should be put on behaviour!?

Read the MARS and use it for drills, discussions and training on board.
